Situated in the now fashionable meat packing district of New York, Soho House Hotel New York opened in 2003. Facilities include a bar, restaurant, spa and 28 unusually spacious and extremely comfortable rooms.
Ilse Crawford and her team at studioilse were tasked with creating a look that was sympathetic to the building and history of the area, and would appeal to the new and existing Soho House members alike.
George Smith was chosen to provide a large amount of furniture for the project. The pieces used came both from our from standard range, as well as completely new bespoke designs including a 39 foot long Chesterfield sofa, which has become almost as much of a talking point as the roof top swimming pool.
Due to the scale and design of some of the pieces it was necessary to do some of the upholstery on site. To facilitate this a small team of our highly skilled craftsmen made a total of three trips from Newcastle to New York.
Entrepreneur Nick Jones, who runs Soho House plc, faced an even bigger challenge earlier this year when the management team decided to develop a property in New York .
George Smith provided more than 90 pieces of furniture, both from its standard range and specially commissioned pieces, perhaps the most striking is the 39-foot long Chesterfield, upholstered in George Smith’s own hand dyed leather , which forms the central talking point.
Nick Jones comments: “The furniture that George Smith delivered to Soho House is of exceptional quality and comfort, but this is certainly not where their abilities ended. Anyone who works in my field understands the logistical dilemmas that arise in a multi-layered project. George Smith successfully navigated all of the problems that confronted them and made simple and smart solutions, This skill is invaluable.”
